Electricity Outlook Report
The Northern Territory Electricity Outlook Report provides an annual assessment of the Territory’s electricity system, with a focus on the demand and supply outlook for the Darwin–Katherine, Alice Springs and Tennant Creek power systems over a 10-year outlook period.
Under section 45 of the Electricity Reform Act 2000, the Commission is required to publish a review of prospective trends in the capacity and reliability of the Territory’s power systems relative to projected load growth.
Up until and including 2023, the Northern Territory Electricity Outlook Report was developed with the assistance of the Australian Energy Market Operator and included detailed modelling of electricity demand and supply adequacy.
The Commission has published a 2024 Northern Territory Electricity Outlook Report Update, which takes a different approach. The Report does not include new modelling and instead provides a high-level, qualitative assessment of material changes since the 2023 Northern Territory Electricity Outlook Report, based on updated information, including from licensees. It identifies whether system adequacy and reliability risks have increased, decreased or remained the same compared to the assessment in the 2023 Northern Territory Electricity Outlook Report. The update uses a simplified three-tier risk rating (low, medium or high) across the short (0–3 years), medium (4–6 years) and long (7–9 years) term.
The 2024 Northern Territory Electricity Outlook Report Update should be read in conjunction with the 2023 Northern Territory Electricity Outlook Report, which contains the underlying modelling, methodology and assumptions used as the baseline for the 2024 Northern Territory Electricity Outlook Report Update.
Past editions of the Northern Territory Electricity Outlook Report can be found on the publications page.
